Eating Healthy at Purdue’s Most Popular Restaurants

I can’t be the only one who struggles to find healthy options while eating at Purdue’s most popular restaurants. Whether you’re on a diet to get that spring break body or don’t want another gut-bomb meal, I have compiled the healthiest options to get at Stacked Pickle, Triple XXX, Pappy’s Sweet Shop and Nine Irish Brothers.

Stacked Pickle

This restaurant has so many delicious options that it’s difficult to find a nutritious and low calorie one. I have picked out four options that will keep you happy and healthy on your next dinner date or night out with your friends.

  1. ‘The Skinny’

This is a wrap that comes with sliced turkey, bacon, guacamole, lettuce, diced tomatoes and swiss cheese served hot in a spinach wrap. Substitute the fries with a side salad, fruit cup, wedge salad, or mixed veggies for a low-cal meal.

  1. Chicken or Grilled Shrimp Rice Bowl

These bowls come with either shrimp or chicken for the protein,  jasmine rice, veggies, scallions and your choice of sauce. This dish is nutritious and gluten free for my celiac friends. The sauce options are Hot, Hot BBQ, Spicy Asian, Spicy Honey Garlic, Sweet Habanero, Medium, Kentucky Bourbon, Teriyaki, or BBQ Sauce.

  1. Greek Salad

The Greek salad includes romaine lettuce, diced tomatoes, red onion, feta cheese, black olives, grilled chicken breast and served with balsamic vinaigrette.

4.    Spinach Berry Salad

This includes spinach leaves, strawberries, dried cranberries, bleu cheese crumbles, grilled chicken breast and served with raspberry vinaigrette dressing.

Triple XXX

Indiana’s oldest drive-in is notorious for hosting Guy Fieri, the Drew Brees special and a lot of other comfort food dishes, so here are two omelets that are on the healthier end to choose from. Both omelets are made with two eggs and served with fried potatoes or hash browns and toast. Substitute the hash browns or fried potatoes with oatmeal and choose wheat toast or an english muffin.

  1. Mother Road Omelet

This includes ham, onion, green pepper and cheddar cheese.

  1. Beatnik Veggie Omelet

This has onion, green pepper, mushroom, tomato and cheddar cheese.

Pappy’s Sweet Shop

This is the cute old fashioned diner in The Union that always pulls you in when you pass by. These are great options for a quick grub between classes to keep you going throughout the day.

  1. Homestyle Breakfast

Two farm fresh eggs any style, choice of bacon, sausage or ham, choice of hash browns and choice of biscuit, toast or english muffin.

2. Grilled Chicken Sandwich

A 4 ounce house marinated chicken breast sandwich.

3. Veggie Burger

Their very own “gardenburger”.

-Other healthy options are tomato soup or a bowl o’chili.

Nine Irish Brothers

It definitely is a challenge to not order the rueben or fish n chips, but your tummy will thank you later. As for salads, you have the option of adding proteins like grilled chicken, boiled egg or salmon.

  1. Black and Blue Salad

Crisp romaine lettuce tossed in parmesan peppercorn dressing, then topped with diced tomatoes, blue cheese crumbles, parmesan cheese, red onions and grilled steak to order.

  1. Dublin Salad

Fresh & healthy field greens topped with dried cranberries, crunchy sunflower seeds, diced red onion and feta cheese crumbles.

  1. Chicken Sandwich

Seasoned grilled chicken breast served on a soft bun, topped to order. Substitute the pub chips with the side salad or soup.

  1. Veggie  Sandwich

Sautéed green and red bell peppers, mushrooms and onions with feta cheese and raspberry vinaigrette dressing, served on white toast. Substitute the pub chips with the side salad or soup.

  1. Stormin’ Norman’s Atlantic Salmon

Spicy eight-ounce pan-seared salmon fillet with sides of our famous champ and vegetable of the day, with a slice of soda bread.

Although it may be difficult, these healthier options are out there. Be strong willed and say no to that burger or grilled cheese and be happy being healthy instead.
